Climate-friendly wine bottles that slash emissions through space-saving shape and 100% recycled PET
Climate tech focus
Company mission
Packamama offers packaging protecting Mother Earth. Our vision is a low carbon future in the drinks industry, while our mission is to innovate to create climate tech packaging that achieves this. We're starting in the wine industry because it has a packaging problem; round, glass bottles are the single largest contributor to a bottle of wine's carbon footprint. Additionally, 68% of bottled wine's carbon footprint comes from the bottle, secondary packaging and transport according to the Australian Wine Research Institute. These bottles are heavy, spatially inefficient and fragile, and no longer fit for purpose in the 21st century.
Packamama is bringing wine bottles into the 21st century with our innovative eco-flat wine bottle, which is flat to save space and made from Australian-sourced 100% recycled PET to save weight and energy. Improvements to shape and material mean our bottles are 84% lighter and ~40% spatially smaller than a typical bottle (but still 7cl). Our bottles address climate change because these savings help slash a wine bottle's carbon footprint by approximately half (according to 3rd party LCAs). Transitioning to a circular economy has also been identified as a key way to help reduce carbon emissions (Ellen MacArthur Foundation), which is why we use pre-existing material that's already in circulation and go to great lengths to ensure our bottles can be recycled after use (using the PREP tool in collaboration with our customers).
By supplying our eco-flat wine bottles to wine businesses, we are empowering them to take climate action in wine's carbon footprint hotspot area. Our goal is for our format to become the dominant packaging format for everyday drinking wines (around 85% of total volumes). By taking inspiration from traditional bottle shapes, and using a material with transparent glass-looking properties, our bottles retain an emotional connection to a bottle and are aesthetically pleasing. We believe that innovation that looks beautiful has more likelihood of being more widely adopted and therefore creating a more positive environmental impact in reducing emissions. Given that 36bn bottles of wine are consumed every year, the carbon reduction potential is very significant.
Our eco-flat bottles are already available in the UK and Nordics. We have a Melbourne office, and our bottles will launch very shortly in Australia, with wine companies Accolade Wines and Taylors Wines.
