We are automating orchards in order to reduce waste and to improve the ability to feed our future populations. Currently fruit picking is a highly inefficient and expensive process. We cannot get enough people to do it so need to encourage people to come from overseas to pick our fruit. This has the indirect impact of increasing emissions. 10-20% of fruit is also damaged by humans which significantly devalues it and results in much of it loss to landfill.
